Hocus Pocus

1.) Description (Editorial Reviews)

Conjure up a cauldron of laughs with HOCUS POCUS, a fiendishly fun movie now on Blu-ray for the first time, featuring an all-new digital restoration with enhanced picture and sound. Academy Award(R) nominee Bette Midler (Best Actress, 1991, FOR THE BOYS), Sarah Jessica Parker (SEX IN THE CITY) and Kathy Najimy (THE WEDDING PLANNER) star in a wild and wacky comedy for the entire family. When three 17th century Salem witches are accidentally summoned by modern-day pranksters, the 300-year-old trio sets out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth, but first they must outwit three kids and a talking cat. Get ready for a night of zany fun in this bewitching comedy classic -- now even better on Blu-ray!|Producer David Kirschner came up with the idea for the movie one night while he and his young daughter were sitting outside and his neighbor's black cat strayed by. Kirschner began to unspool a narrative of how the cat was once a boy who was changed into a feline 300 years ago by three witches.|Actress Kathy Najimy described her character Mary as "Eddie Haskell as a witch," referring to the character on the classic TV series "Leave It To Beaver." "She sucks up to Winifred [Bette Midler's character] every chance she gets. She wants to be part of the power club and Winifred's got the power."|To create the costumes, designer Mary Vogt read many historical books about Salem, Massachusetts. "I even read diaries of women who were hanged as witches," she says.

2.) Special Features

This is my favorite Halloween movie. It's the one movie I want to watch in October. The Cast: Bette Middler's amazing and makes this movie. Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najiminy were excellent witches. Also, notice "McGee" from NCIS who plays young Zachary Binks in the beginning of the movie... although they voiced him over. The little girl...God help you if you can't tune her out b/c she is a PAIN. Hard to believe she later starred in American Beauty.

The plot ... clever storyline with some really hysterical witches! VERY 1993...this movie is a bit dated. The disgust at virginity by today's standards was really weird, ESPECIALLY in a Disney movie, but in the 90's (the days of Dylan McKay & Brenda Walsh) teenagers all thought they were 30-year olds, and virginity was as shameful as being seen with your parents. I liked that they ended it with no chance for a sequel... very un-Disney-like, but a sequel would have murdered this movie. They even worked in a zombie and some good Halloween grossness without making it too cuddly and loveable, and really found a good balance that everyone can enjoy. I'd definitely recommend it be at the top of your list this coming October!

Customer Review

1.)This is one of my absolute favorite Halloween movies! Yes, it is kind of cheesy but it has become my traditional holiday movie that is just simple and fun to watch. Some people may think that the subject matter is a little dark for kids with the witches that consume the youth of children... and if you think about just that plot point then I would agree. But Disney does such a good job with the rest of the story development that it didn't become an issue for us. If you are looking for a fun Halloween movie to watch as a family and can sit back and enjoy if for the campy fun that it is intended then you will love this movie. And then maybe like me you will watch it every year with a cup of hot cider and enjoy the onset of fall.

2.)I rented this on VHS in 1994 when my children were little. Movie rentals were on special for .49 cents. (Funny, these keyboards don't have key signs for cents any longer.) My children loved, loved, loved it and loved it so much they wore the tape out and I couldn't go to sleep some nights for waking up dreaming that I was in a scene of the darned thing! Seems, the fondness for it was greater in my eldest so, I bought this for them. Oh, you would have thought I'd have given them money. To say the least it was funny....and they were happy to get it. Were they satisfied? Sure they were. Are they still? Sure they are. Was it worthy the buy or the price? Without a doubt it was!!!! How's that for a product review?

3.)This is a great family Halloween (or anytime) movie. I'd never seen it before buying this DVD, but had heard from a lot of friends that they enjoyed watching it with their kids. I have 2 boys. They are 11 and 8 years old. At first, the 11 year old didn't really want to watch, but when I told him that he was not going to be playing on the computer or Kindle while we watched it, he decided to suffer and watch it with us. I did ask him about half way through (after seeing him laugh a few times) if he was enjoying it and he tried to act like it was "ok" but did continue watching. I know my 8 year old really enjoyed it, and I did too. It's quite funny, not really scary (although maybe younger children would find it a little scary in parts). There is one part where they refer to the witches coming back to life because a virgin lit a special candle. My 8 year old asked me what one was but I just pretended I hadn't heard him because I was so engrossed in the movie and he didn't ask again.
